What is included in the cost?

  • Operation theatre, surgeon and anaesthetist charges
  • Medications related to the surgery
  • Room for the planned stay (usually 3 to 5 days for conventional surgery)
  • Physiotherapy, food and administrative charges

Usually billed separately: pre-surgery tests and scans, extra days in hospital, blood products, and complication care. Rehabilitation after discharge is extra: 15 to 20 physiotherapy sessions typically cost ₹15,000 to ₹40,000, and home visits ₹800 to ₹2,000 a session.

Why do prices differ so much?

  1. Implant. Standard metal-and-polyethylene implants are the lowest priced; ceramic and imported implants cost more. NPPA price ceilings apply to the implant itself, so most of the difference between hospitals is in everything else. At Health1, an imported implant adds about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per knee over an Indian-made one.
  2. Technology. Robotic planning adds ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh on average. See our robotic knee replacement cost guide.
  3. Room. General, semi-private and private rooms are priced differently.
  4. Health conditions. Diabetes, heart, kidney or lung conditions may need extra tests, monitoring or ICU days.
  5. One knee or both. Both knees in one sitting cost less than two separate surgeries but need a fit patient.

Does insurance cover knee replacement?

Yes, most health policies pay for knee replacement when it is medically needed. Check:

  • Waiting period: commonly 2 to 3 years for arthritis-related joint replacement. Surgery after an accident is generally covered from the first day.
  • Room rent cap and co-pay that can reduce the payout.
  • Pre- and post-hospital cover: often 60 days before and 90 to 180 days after.
  • Cashless: ask Health1’s insurance desk to send pre-authorisation 48 to 72 hours before a planned admission.
  • Government schemes: CGHS and ECHS patients are treated at Health1 (details here).

Health1 lists these insurers and TPAs on its Insurance page: HDFC Ergo, Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, Aditya Birla, Medi Assist, MD India, Heritage Health, Paramount, Go Digit, IFFCO Tokio, SBI General, Chola MS, Generali Central and others.

How to plan your costs

  1. Book an orthopaedic consultation and X-ray. Not every painful knee needs a replacement.
  2. Ask for a written estimate that lists inclusions and exclusions.
  3. Ask which implant is proposed, its brand and warranty.
  4. Share your policy with the hospital insurance desk to check cashless eligibility.
  5. Budget for physiotherapy and follow-up visits.
