If you are comparing hospitals, the useful question is not only “what is the price?” but “what is included in it?” This guide explains the cost, what changes it, how robotic surgery compares with conventional surgery on price, and how to plan the payment.
How much does robotic knee replacement cost in Ahmedabad?
| Item | Indicative cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Robotic total knee replacement at Health1, one knee | ₹1.8 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh | Health1 Shilaj |
| Both knees together at Health1 | ₹4.2 lakh to ₹6.5 lakh | Health1 Shilaj |
| Indian-made vs imported implant | Imported implants add about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per knee | Health1 Shilaj |
| Robotic add-on over conventional surgery (India average) | ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh | Ditto Insurance cost guide |
| Robotic knee replacement, India average, one knee | ₹2 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh | ICICI Lombard cost guide |
National figures are published estimates and vary by city and hospital. They are shown only so you can compare. The final cost may vary with your clinical requirements, implant selection and room category, and your written estimate from Health1 is the number that matters.
What affects the cost of robotic knee replacement?
- Implant type. Indian-made implants usually cost less than imported ones, by about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per knee at Health1. Government price ceilings (set by NPPA) apply to total knee implants, so implant prices are capped even in private hospitals.
- Room category. General ward, semi-private and private rooms are priced differently. At Health1 the stay is typically 5 to 7 days, including one day in the ICU after surgery.
- One knee or both. Both knees in a single surgery can reduce total hospital stay and recovery time, and your surgeon will check if you are suitable.
- Your health. Diabetes, heart or kidney conditions, or a previous knee operation can add tests, monitoring or ICU time.
- Tests and physiotherapy. A CT scan for 3D planning, pre-operative blood tests, and 15 to 20 physiotherapy sessions after discharge.
What is included in the Health1 estimate?
The Health1 package covers operation theatre charges, surgeon and anaesthetist charges, medications related to the surgery, the room for the planned stay, physiotherapy, food and administrative charges. Items such as pre-surgery tests, extra days of stay, blood products and any complication care may be billed separately. Ask the patient counsellor for a written breakdown before admission.
How Health1 does robotic knee replacement
Health1 uses the Cuvis Joint system by Curexo Surgical Robotics, South Korea. The surgeon is in full control; the robot is a precision tool. A CT scan builds a 3D model of your knee, the surgeon plans the bone cuts on that model, and the robotic arm carries out the approved plan. The system supports total knee replacement, medial pivot knee replacement and total hip replacement, and works with implants from several makers. Health1 Shilaj also operates SSI Mantra 3.0 for robotic minimal access surgery, which makes it one of the few hospitals in Ahmedabad with two robotic systems. Robotic vs conventional knee replacement: price and value
| Conventional | Robotic (Cuvis) | |
|---|---|---|
| Bone cuts | Manual jigs and saws | Planned on a 3D model, executed by robotic arm |
| Typical added cost | Baseline | About ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh more (national average) |
| Operating time | Varies | About 60 to 90 minutes at Health1 |
| Walking with support | Day 1 to 2 | Within about 24 hours |
| Hospital stay | 3 to 5 days | 5 to 7 days at Health1, including one ICU day |
| Implant life | 15 to 25 years | 15 to 25 years; better alignment may reduce wear |
Robotic planning aims for more accurate alignment and gentler handling of surrounding tissue. Whether that is worth the added cost for you depends on your age, activity, bone shape and surgeon’s advice. A good surgeon will tell you honestly if conventional surgery is enough. Will insurance pay for robotic knee replacement?
Most health policies cover knee replacement when it is medically necessary, and robotic-assisted surgery is usually claimed under the same procedure. Points to check before you book:
- Waiting periods. Many policies have a 2 to 3 year waiting period for joint replacement from arthritis. Accident-related surgery is generally covered from the start.
- Room rent limits and sub-limits. A cap on room rent can reduce the amount paid.
- Cashless pre-authorisation. Apply 48 to 72 hours before a planned surgery; Health1’s insurance desk helps with this.
- Schemes. CGHS and ECHS beneficiaries can be treated at Health1 (details here). Robotic surgeries are not included under the PMJAY / MA scheme.
Health1 lists these insurers and TPAs on its Insurance page: HDFC Ergo, Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, Aditya Birla, Medi Assist, MD India, Heritage Health, Paramount, Go Digit, IFFCO Tokio, SBI General, Chola MS, Generali Central and others.
Who should consider robotic knee replacement?
- Severe knee arthritis with pain that limits walking, stairs or sleep
- Physiotherapy, medicines and injections have stopped helping
- X-rays show worn-out joint space
- You want a surgeon-planned, 3D-guided approach
Not everyone needs surgery. A consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon, a knee X-ray and an examination come first.
What to ask before you decide
- What exactly is included in the written estimate, and what is billed extra?
- Which implant will be used, and what is its brand and price?
- How many robotic knee replacements has the surgeon done?
- How many days of stay and physiotherapy are included?
- What is the cashless limit approved by my insurer?
