Bariatric Surgery
Types of Weight loss Surgery Offered :
- Gastric Sleeve : In gastric sleeve surgery, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, a surgeon removes most of your stomach, leaving only a banana-shaped section that is closed with staples. The surgery reduces the amount of food that can fit in your stomach, making you feel full sooner.
- Gastric Bypass : Gastric bypass surgery, also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is done in three steps. First, the surgeon staples your stomach, creating a small pouch in the upper section. Second, the surgeon divides your small intestine into two parts and attaches the lower part directly to the small stomach pouch. The surgeon then reconnects the upper part of the small intestine to a new location farther down on the lower part of the small intestine.
- Adjustable Gastric Band : In this type of surgery, the surgeon places a ring with an inner inflatable band around the top of your stomach to create a small pouch. The inner band has a circular balloon inside that is filled with saline solution. The surgeon can adjust the inner band to resize the opening from the pouch to the rest of your stomach by injecting or removing the saline solution through a small device, called a port, that is placed under your skin.
- Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal switch : Surgeons less commonly use a fourth operation, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.

FAQs for Bariatric Surgery
What is bariatric surgery and how does it help in weight loss?
Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure designed to help with long-term weight loss by reducing stomach size or altering digestion. It is recommended when diet and exercise fail and helps improve conditions like diabetes and obesity-related complications.
Who is eligible for bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is usually recommended for individuals with severe obesity, typically a BMI above 40 or above 35 with health conditions like diabetes or hypertension. It is considered when non-surgical weight loss methods are not effective.
What are the different types of bariatric surgery?
The most common types of bariatric surgery include sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and gastric balloon procedures. These surgeries work by limiting food intake and altering digestion to promote effective and sustained weight loss.
Is bariatric surgery safe?
Yes, bariatric surgery is considered safe when performed by experienced surgeons using advanced techniques. Like any surgery, it carries some risks, but proper pre-operative evaluation and post-operative care significantly improve outcomes.
How much weight can be lost after bariatric surgery?
Weight loss after bariatric surgery varies depending on the procedure and patient lifestyle. Most patients experience significant and sustained weight loss, along with improvement in obesity-related conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
How does bariatric surgery affect health conditions like diabetes?
Bariatric surgery not only helps with weight loss but also improves or even resolves conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. It plays a major role in metabolic health improvement.
What is the role of anaesthesia in bariatric surgery?
Anaesthesia is essential in bariatric surgery to ensure a pain-free and safe procedure. It requires careful planning due to obesity-related risks and involves continuous monitoring during and after surgery.
How long does it take to recover from bariatric surgery?
Recovery time depends on the type of bariatric surgery performed. Most minimally invasive procedures allow faster recovery, with patients returning to normal activities within a few weeks under proper medical guidance.
What are the risks or complications of bariatric surgery?
Possible risks include infection, bleeding, nutritional deficiencies, and digestive changes. However, these risks are minimized with proper surgical care, follow-up, and adherence to dietary guidelines after surgery.
Is bariatric surgery a permanent solution for weight loss?
Bariatric surgery is an effective long-term solution, but maintaining results requires lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise. It works best as part of a comprehensive weight management plan.
