Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs from mouth into anus, along the alimentary canal, are the focus of this speciality. Physicians practicing in this field are called gastroenterologists.

ENDOSCOPY

An endoscopy is a procedure where organs inside your body are looked at using an instrument called an endoscope. An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube that has a light and camera at one end. Images of the inside of your body are shown on a television screen

Upper GI endoscopy can be used to identify many different diseases :

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • ulcers
  • cancer link
  • inflammation, or swelling
  • precancerous abnormalities such as Barrett's esophagus
  • celiac disease
  • strictures or narrowing of the esophagus
  • blockages

It includes a variety of surgical techniques to diagnose and treat GI disorders.

Surgery can be done on both the upper and lower GI tracts, depending on the problem or disease.

HPB (Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary) surgery is a subspecialty of surgery specific to benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary tree. HPB surgery can be complex and requires specialized training and/or experience.
